Abstract

The talk will present some recent experiments that sought to determine the influence of perceived auditory and visual features on the reading of dialogue. In two experiments, dialogue between a male and female story character could be heard when readers moved the eyes onto corresponding segments of text. The gender of the audible talker matched the gender of the talking story character in a congruent condition and their genders mismatched in an incongruent condition. In another experiment, the dialogue of female and male story characters was color-coded so that its hue either matched or mismatched readers' gender-specific color associations. No audible dialogue was presented and no color coding occurred in baseline conditions. The results revealed auditory gender congruency effects only during the onset of dialogue reading. Color-based effects of gender congruency occurred, by contrast, throughout dialogue reading. The results indicate that comprehension of male-female dialogue during reading involves use of gender-specific auditory and visual images. Use of gender-defining auditory features may have been more limited than use of visual features, because auditory images are typically used to represent phonological word forms rather than content.
