报告题目:The Effect of Visual Referents on Word Learning
报告摘要:

Knowing a word entails knowing a phonological word form, knowing its meaning or reference, and having associations between the two. Does word learning differ depending on the properties of the referents? The first question we examined was to what extent phonological word form learning depends on whether a referent is or is not available for association? We compared phonological word form learning when there was a visual image available for association and when there was no image present. The results showed that the availability of visual associate facilitated the retrieval of phonological word form, but only when the visual image was present during testing. The second question examined the effect of referent similarity on word learning when a few words are to be learned relatively concurrently. It turned out that both the naming and the stem completion performance dropped as the level of referent similarity increased. The above findings are discussed in terms of the processes involved in word learning.
